Who are Oppidan’s mentors in schools?
Oppidan Education mentors are young people in their 20s and 30s, driven by social impact but with the flexibility to work freelance in schools around the world.
Oppidan’s 1:1 delivery for consumer families is supported by a larger team of close to 200 mentors, mixing full-time and freelance work. The schools team relies on a smaller group of around 50 mentors regularly working in schools; this work demands a more specific skillset, training, experience and timetable to do justice to the schools we partner with. For these mentors, it’s about consistency, pedagogy and professionalism in every day they offer.
The mentor team includes trained teachers, performers, writers, scientists, doctors, lawyers and entrepreneurs, amongst other careers. We champion the breadth of their experience and interest and their relatability for the diverse young people we serve.
To us, these mentors are rockstars. They care about young people and their work is no ‘side-hustle’ - it’s a meaningful part of their professional life.
Our mentors benefit from an unfair advantage in schools: they’re not teachers. That position of impartiality and their ‘wow factor’ makes for great engagement with students, but also astute perspective and professional reporting to triangulate our provision with a school’s ongoing support to that young person.
