Programme 

Over the 2022/23 academic year, Oppidan mentors provided training sessions to a group of 20 Y12 pupils. The training took place over a series of workshops spread across two days. Each sixth-form mentor was paired with two KS3 mentees, with two-to-one peer mentoring sessions taking place throughout the Spring and Summer terms.  

Outcomes

  • Significant increase in self-awareness among Y12 mentors

    • 37% average improvement in understanding their own feelings and behaviours

  • Both Y12 mentors and KS3 mentees experienced enhanced speaking skills

    • Mentors showed an 18% increase in adaptive speaking and mentees demonstrated a 56% improvement in speaking clearly to unfamiliar people.

  • Y12 mentors displayed significant growth in leadership abilities

    • 16% increase in supporting others through motivation and a substantial 65% increase in supporting others through active guidance and empowerment.

  • KS3 mentees demonstrated improved self-efficacy

    • 71% increase in their expectation to do well in school, and increased empathy, with a 47% rise in their ability to understand others' feelings.

  • The programme fostered an increased sense of belonging and significance for both mentors and mentees

    • Mentees reported a 60% increase in feeling they belong at school, and mentors noted the development of a "safe space" environment. Positive feedback was received from both groups, highlighting their satisfaction and appreciation for the mentoring experience.
